It only takes a few seconds to make lasting first impressions. So you definitely want to make sure you manage well every second of first meetings. Psychologist David Lewis, in the book The Secret Language of Success, offers some practical tips to help you "get it right the first time" - even before you open your mouth to speak.
First, practice good posture - always stand or sit up straight, never slouch. Good posture will help improve your appearance.
Second, shape up. You need not have the body of Cindy Crawford nor Jean Claude van Damme to look good. But a little bit of exercise will help tone your body, improve your stamina and boost your vitality.
Third, demonstrate self-control. Learn to maintain a relaxed body even in stressful situations. Learn proper breathing skills. Banish negative thoughts - these will only manifest themselves through your facial expression and body language.
Fourth, be conscious of your body language. When you meet someone for the first time, look alert, interested, and pleasant. Make eye contact. When you shake hands, raise your eyebrows in the universally understood signal of a friendly greeting. After about three seconds, break eye contact with a downward glance.
